Athens Airport Departures 2026: Check-In, Security & Tips
Everything you need to know about departing from Athens International Airport (ATH / Eleftherios Venizelos). From how early to arrive and where to check in, to security wait times, departure gates, lounges and the best way to reach the airport for your flight.
How Early Should You Arrive at Athens Airport?
Athens Airport is generally well-organised but can get very busy in summer (June β September). As a rule:
- International flights (non-Schengen): Arrive at least 3 hours before departure. This includes flights to the UK, USA, UAE and other non-EU destinations.
- EU / Schengen flights: Arrive at least 2 hours before departure. Schengen means free movement β no passport control when flying to Germany, France, Spain etc.
- Domestic Greek flights: Arrive at least 90 minutes before departure.
- Peak season (July β August): Add an extra 30 β 45 minutes for all categories β check-in queues and security are longer in peak summer.
Check-In at Athens Airport
Online Check-In
Most airlines allow online check-in 24 β 48 hours before departure. Complete online check-in in advance to save time at the airport. If you have hold luggage, you will still need to go to a bag drop desk rather than the full check-in counter β bag drop queues are typically much shorter.
Check-In Desks
Athens Airport has a single terminal building with check-in counters in the main departures hall on the upper level. Check-in desks are grouped by airline and are well signposted. Desks typically open 3 β 4 hours before departure and close 45 β 60 minutes before departure (confirm your airline's cut-off time). Aegean Airlines operates a dedicated fast check-in lane for business class and Miles&Bonus Gold/Platinum passengers.
Security at Athens Airport
After check-in, proceed to the central security screening area on the same level. Athens Airport operates a standard EU airport security process:
- Remove laptops and large electronics from your bag
- Liquids in containers of 100ml or less in a transparent 1-litre resealable bag
- Remove jackets, belts and shoes if asked
- Athens Airport has body scanners β expect to walk through one
Security wait times are typically 10 β 25 minutes outside peak season. In July and August, allow up to 45 minutes during peak morning departure waves (06:00 β 09:00). Priority security lanes are available for business class passengers on some airlines.
Gates & Departure Lounges
Schengen vs Non-Schengen Gates
After security, the departures area splits into two wings: Schengen gates (EU free-movement destinations, no passport control) and non-Schengen gates (UK, USA, Middle East, etc., with passport control). Make sure you follow the correct signs for your destination β once through passport control on the non-Schengen side, you cannot easily return to the Schengen side.
Shops, Restaurants & Duty-Free
Athens Airport has a decent range of duty-free shops, Greek food and souvenir stores, cafes and sit-down restaurants both before and after security. The best food options (including a superior duty-free selection and the Athens Airport Food Agora) are after security in the departure zone. Allow time to explore β some travellers plan an extra 30 minutes for a proper sit-down meal before boarding.
Airport Lounges
Athens Airport has several departure lounges accessible to eligible passengers:
- Aegean Airlines Lounge (Schengen): For business class passengers and Aegean Gold/Platinum status members
- Goldair Handling Lounge: Pay-on-entry lounge accessible to any departing passenger via Priority Pass, Lounge Key or day pass (check current pricing)
- Non-Schengen Lounge: Available for qualifying business class and premium card passengers on the non-Schengen side

Allow 35 β 50 minutes from the city centre in normal traffic; add extra time for peak morning departures.
