Piraeus to the airport
Metro Line 3 now runs all the way from Piraeus to the airport without a change, which makes this the one port route where public transport is genuinely competitive — about an hour, for a fraction of the taxi fare. The catch is luggage and the cruise terminals: Piraeus is enormous, and the metro station is not next to most berths. Rafina to the airport
The short one, and the one people underestimate in the wrong direction. Rafina is only 25–40 minutes from the airport by road, but there is no metro and the bus timetable is thin, so a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the practical answer. Lavrio has no direct public transport link to the airport at all, so this is a taxi or private transfer route by default: 45–65 minutes and €70–90 depending on the hour. If you are leaving a cruise ship
Cruise disembarkation runs late more often than it runs early, and the terminal-to-metro walk at Piraeus is long. The rule of thumb that works: allow four hours between your scheduled disembarkation time and a short-haul departure, five for long-haul. A pre-booked transfer with a named pickup point at your terminal removes the worst variable, which is standing in a taxi queue with three hundred other passengers who just got off the same ship.
Getting to the Airport from Your Athens Hotel
Hotel pickup is the same journey as a city-centre departure, with one difference that matters: the driver has to find you, and central Athens streets are narrow, one-way and often pedestrianised. A pre-booked transfer takes the hotel name and handles it. A street taxi hailed outside at 05:00 does not always exist.
- Syntagma, Plaka, Monastiraki, Koukaki: 40–50 minutes in normal traffic, longer 07:30–10:00 and 16:00–20:00.
- Kolonaki and the museum district: similar, but the one-way system means the pickup point may be around the corner from the door.
- Piraeus and the coast (Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni): often quicker than the centre — the coastal road to the airport avoids the city entirely.
- Airport hotels (Sofitel and the Spata cluster): minutes away; the Sofitel is directly opposite the terminal on foot.
Most Athens hotels will book a car for you, and most use a local firm at a mark-up over the fixed airport fare. Ask what they are quoting before you accept; if it is materially above the €40 daytime fixed fare plus luggage, book it yourself. Athens has a heavy 06:00–08:00 departure bank and the metro does not start early enough for most of it — the first airport train leaves the centre well after 05:00, which is too late for a 06:30 flight. For anything departing before about 08:00, a pre-booked car is the only option that does not involve a gamble. Set the pickup for three hours before departure for a non-Schengen flight, two and a half for Schengen.
