Athens Ferry Strike on Friday 30 October 2026: Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio Ports Affected

Monday 19 October 2026 — Greek seafarers’ unions have called a 24-hour strike on all categories of ships sailing from the ports of Attica — Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio — for Friday 30 October 2026. The call was issued by the seamen’s union PENEN on 1 October and has since been joined by the marine engineers’ union PEMEN and the Piraeus dockworkers’ union ENEDEP, as part of an international day of action in around 60 ports across Europe, Asia and Africa. If you have an island ferry booked out of Athens for that Friday, read on and re-plan now. Athens International Airport and airport transfers are not affected.

What happened

The Panhellenic Seamen’s Union (PENEN) announced on 1 October 2026 a 24-hour “pan-Attica” strike on all categories of ships for Friday 30 October, with the stated aim of immobilising vessels in the ports of Attica. On 12 October the marine engineers’ union PEMEN confirmed it would join, and the Piraeus dockworkers’ union ENEDEP is also taking part. The action is tied to an international day of action by port and shipping workers, which the unions say will involve around 60 ports on four continents.

The unions’ demands are a mix of political and labour issues: they oppose seafarers being sent into war zones in the Persian Gulf and the Black Sea, and they are pressing for pay rises, collective labour agreements across all ship categories and stronger crew-safety measures. A strike rally is planned in Piraeus at 10:00 on 30 October at the square in front of the Municipal Theatre.

What is not yet confirmed: PEMEN has asked the national seafarers’ federation PNO to call a nationwide 24-hour strike for the same day. If PNO agrees, the stoppage would extend to ferries sailing from every Greek port, not just Attica. We will update this post and the live tracker as soon as that decision is announced. Note also that Greek ferry strikes are occasionally challenged in court and trimmed back in the final days — check with your ferry company on 28–29 October before you set out.

How to get around the strike if you are travelling to the islands

If you are flying into Athens and heading straight to an island on 30 October, your airport transfer runs as normal — the problem is the next leg. The cleanest fix is to move your ferry to Thursday 29 or Saturday 31 October. Ferry companies normally rebook or refund strike-cancelled tickets free of charge, but you need to contact them (or the agent you booked through) to arrange it. Book an extra night in Athens or Piraeus rather than gambling on the strike being called off.

If you cannot move the date, fly instead: Aegean, Olympic and Sky Express operate domestic flights from Athens airport to Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Naxos, Milos, Crete (Heraklion and Chania), Rhodes, Kos and other islands. Airline staff are not part of this strike. Flights on strike days sell out early, so book as soon as you know your ferry is at risk.

If you are on an island planning to return to Athens on 30 October for an onward flight, do not rely on the morning ferry. Come back on 29 October, or fly to Athens. Our guides to Athens airport to Piraeus, Athens airport to Rafina and Athens airport to Lavrio cover the port-to-airport leg once sailings resume.
