Athens–Thessaloniki Trains Suspended June 28 – July 18, 2026

Updated June 26, 2026 — Hellenic Train is suspending the main Athens–Thessaloniki railway line for roughly 20 days, from June 28 to July 18, 2026, for long-planned repairs to storm damage on the Domokos–Krannonas section. If Thessaloniki or northern Greece is on your itinerary this July, plan around the railway.

What is closing and why

The suspension covers the core intercity line between Athens and Thessaloniki while crews restore infrastructure damaged by Storm Daniel in autumn 2023. Partial operation as far as Lianokladi was under examination, with onward travel by replacement bus or combined transport. A separate suspension has also applied to the Alexandroupoli–Ormenio line since May 23.
